BUDDHA GEM PAGODA IN VĨNH LONG

Historical Background

Phật Ngọc Xá Lợi Pagoda (or Buddha Gem Pagoda), with an area of over 1.7 hectares, was initially constructed in 1970 under the leadership of the late Venerable Thích Thiện Hoa. However, for various reasons, construction was temporarily halted in April 1975. It wasn’t until 2015 that construction at Phật Ngọc Xá Lợi Pagoda in Vĩnh Long resumed. Several components of the pagoda, such as the main hall, the stupa, the Đức Quan Thế M lộ thiên tower, and the triple gate, were gradually completed under the original name ” Bà Triệu Pagoda”. Located in Vĩnh Hòa hamlet, Tân Ngãi commune, Vĩnh Long city, Vĩnh Long province, the pagoda is one of the revered and significant architectural structures of Buddhism in the region.

2. Architecture and Construction

The architecture of Phật Ngọc Xá Lợi Pagoda is exceptionally unique and diverse, blending traditional and modern elements, featuring various artistic styles from Buddhism around the world.

The pagoda boasts a remarkable and spiritually vibrant collection of Buddha statues, including hundreds of statues representing various Patriarchs and Arhats, which surround the pagoda’s grounds. These statues create a sacred atmosphere that attracts thousands of tourists and Buddhists for visits and prayers. The most prominent highlight of the pagoda is the Đức Phật Quan Thế M Bồ Tát lộ thiên (Great Compassionate Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara) statue, standing at a towering height of 32 meters. This white and gold statue is exquisitely crafted, radiating a serene and compassionate aura. The statue of Quan  m Bà (Mother Goddess of Mercy) stands solemnly atop a large pink lotus throne, supported by three columns with nine golden dragons (symbolizing the Mekong Delta region) gracefully coiling at the base. Inside the Main Hall, there are numerous large columns adorned with intricate carvings and floral motifs, each inscribed with different Buddhist verses.

The Bảo Tháp Xá Lợi (Buddha gem Pagoda Tower) is another prominent feature and the second symbol of this pagoda. It is renowned as the tallest pagoda tower in the Western region, with a height of 45 meters, consisting of 9 levels and a pagoda pinnacle. The tower is hexagonally shaped, symbolizing the Six Paramitas in Buddhism. The tower’s roof corners are intricately carved with dragon motifs, showcasing rich ancient cultural influences.
